Education as a Catalyst for Change
Education is not just a means to acquire knowledge from books—it’s a powerful tool for transforming societies and nations. In today’s world, private universities play a crucial role in expanding and enhancing the quality of higher education. In this context, the establishment of Dr. Momtaz Begum University of Science and Technology (MUST) by Dr. H.B.M. Iqbal stands as a testament to this transformative power. Nestled in the serene village of Bashgari in Bhairab Upazila, far from the busy streets of Dhaka, this institution is a bold and visionary initiative.
The Visionary Behind the Dream
Dr. H.B.M. Iqbal, a distinguished industrialist, politician, and intellectual, envisioned bringing the light of higher education to the underprivileged communities of his village. His journey in the education sector began with the founding of the Royal University of Dhaka in 2003, followed by its permanent campus in the capital. However, his dream extended further—to create broader educational opportunities for the marginalized communities of the surrounding districts. Thus, Dr. Momtaz Begum University of Science and Technology (MUST) was established, with plans to introduce a Women’s Medical College, Nursing Institute, and other technical institutions to expand access to specialized education.
Overcoming Challenges:
Building a University in a Remote Village
Located 70-80 kilometers from Dhaka, the university faced significant challenges in gaining approval. Many questioned whether students would travel such a distance for higher education. Yet, the university’s beautiful campus, peaceful environment, and modern facilities have successfully attracted students and parents.
Reflecting on this accomplishment, Professor Dr. Salimullah Khan recalls Plato’s philosophy—when a university is placed outside the city’s chaos, it fosters unbiased knowledge acquisition, free from political influences. Dr. Iqbal’s efforts have validated this perspective, transforming a rural area into a hub of intellectual growth. His foresight and commitment to quality education stand as an example of what dedicated entrepreneurship can achieve in the education sector.
Goals and Objectives of MUST
1. Expanding Access to Higher Education: Providing quality education for lower and middle-class students in underserved regions.
2. Promoting Research and Innovation: Encouraging a research-oriented academic environment to foster critical thinking and creativity.
3. Ensuring a Genuine Educational Environment: Upholding a politically neutral space for free thought and exploration.
