Abstract
Rauwolfia serpentina (L.) Benth. ex Kurz., a medicinal shrub from the Apocynaceae family, has been extensively utilized in traditional medicine for centuries, particularly for its therapeutic effects in treating hypertension and psychotic disorders. The plant contains a variety of bioactive alkaloids, including reserpine, ajmaline, and serpentine, which have been the focus of numerous studies. This article reviews the pharmacological properties of R. serpentina, with a special emphasis on its hypotensive effects. We explore the mechanisms behind these effects, including the role of the central nervous system and direct actions on peripheral blood vessels.
