BARVIDA Members Demand Election as Scheduled

Shadab Hasin/Staff Correspondent:

Members of the Bangladesh Reconditioned Vehicles Importers and Dealers Association (BARVIDA), the apex organization for reconditioned vehicle traders in the country, have demanded that the association’s elections be held as per the schedule on December 21, 2024.

Signature Campaign in Demand for Timely BARVIDA Election

A signature campaign in support of holding the election as per the announced schedule took place on Saturday, December 14, at noon in Naya Paltan, Dhaka.

Leaders of the organization expressed frustration, stating, “We are already six months behind schedule. A vested group is resorting to various tactics to obstruct the election. This group, active before every election, creates hindrances to disrupt the democratic process, aiming to benefit certain factions. The association has always operated under democratic and fair leadership, and maintaining this tradition is the collective demand of all members.”

They further alleged that “false information has been provided to the court by this conspiratorial group to block the election and appoint an administrator. Despite BARVIDA’s consistent history of democratic elections, attempts are being made to impose an administrator on the organization without any justifiable reason, causing outrage among members.”

The leaders emphasized that holding the election on time is crucial to resolving the grievances and diffusing tensions among the members.

Election Delay Could Disrupt Business Operations

Members have warned that failing to hold the election as scheduled could lead to operational and business disruptions. “The proposal to appoint an administrator is unacceptable. Leadership should be determined through elections, not imposed decisions,” they added.

Abdul Haque
Owner, Haq’s Bay

Abdul Haque, the founding president of BARVIDA and proprietor of Haque’s Bay, stated, “We want the election process completed before the national budget is finalized so that our demands can be effectively presented to the government.”

He also noted, “Certain dishonest individuals are spreading false information and propaganda, which could cause significant harm to the organization and the country.”

Court Petition Challenges Election Commission

BARVIDA member Mohammad Dinul Islam recently filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking the dismissal of the current Election Commission and demanding an independent commission to oversee the election. However, Abdul Haque countered these claims, emphasizing the need to adhere to the scheduled election.

Members Call for Government and Media Support

BARVIDA members reiterated that timely elections would ensure a stable business environment and positively impact the national economy. They urged the media and relevant government authorities to extend their support to facilitate the election on December 21, 2024, as per the schedule.

BARVIDA remains committed to conducting elections democratically and maintaining transparency in its operations for the betterment

of its members and the industry.
