The representative of the Japan-based philanthropic organization, speaking on behalf of both SPF and its parent organization, the Nippon Foundation, expressed sincere gratitude to world leaders for “re-prioritizing” this global crisis.

$10 Million Assistance Focused on Livelihoods and Bhasan Char

Dr. Islam highlighted the foundations’ significant financial contribution, stating they have already spent approximately $10 million since 2017 for humanitarian aid and a livelihood model. The core focus of their efforts is the Bhasan Char model in Bangladesh, which aims to ensure the sustainable self-reliance of the refugee population.

He stressed that “simply humanitarian aid is not enough” and underscored the need for collective international support to ease the “burden” borne by the host country, Bangladesh.

Active Role in Peace and Ceasefire Efforts

The SPF envoy noted that beyond humanitarian work, both foundations have been actively engaged in research and dialogue to encourage the peaceful and dignified repatriation of the Rohingya people.

He revealed their significant involvement in peace efforts, stating that the Chairman of the Nippon Foundation, Mr. Sasakawa, has personally contributed twice to the successful mediation of two ceasefires between the Tatmadaw (Myanmar military) and the Arakan Army.

Concluding his address, Dr. Islam characterized the situation as “one of the most horrific humanitarian crises of our time,” and reaffirmed the foundations’ vision of “peace and prosperity for all people on earth.” He urged the international community to continue its “extraordinary leadership” and remain committed to a sustainable solution for the crisis.
