Commemoration of the July Uprising at Royal University of Dhaka with Documentary Screening

Presswatch report,Dhaka, July 18: A commemorative event marking the spirit of the July Uprising was held at the Royal University of Dhaka, featuring a remembrance seminar and the screening of the short documentary “Voices of the Oppressed.” The program took place on Friday at 3:30 PM in the university auditorium.

The seminar was presided over by the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin. In his remarks, he stated, “The people of Bangladesh have never accepted oppression or injustice. Whenever a regime has turned authoritarian, the people have risen in resistance.” He called upon the faculty and staff to uphold the spirit of July and work towards national progress.

 

Brigadier General (Retd.) ASM Mushfiqur Rahman, Registrar of the university, emphasized, “We must nurture human values in people. Without the advancement of humanity, social injustice can never be permanently eradicated.”

Professor Dr. Md Abu Bakar Siddique (Dipu Siddiqui), Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Acting Controller of Examinations, stressed the importance of practicing ethics, values, and integrity in both personal and professional life.

 

Associate Professor Johorat Ara, Head of the English Department, remarked, “The fight against inequality is far from over. To eliminate discrimination from society, we must continuously cultivate human qualities and fulfill our responsibilities as conscientious citizens.”

 

Associate Professor Murad Hasan, Head of the Department of Business Administration, recalled, “In July 2024, students, teachers, and the public united to stand against injustice and authoritarian rule.”

Following the seminar, the short documentary “Voices of the Oppressed,” directed by Dr. Dipu Siddique, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, was screened. The documentary was formally inaugurated by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. ANM Meshquat Uddin.

 

The documentary captivated the audience in complete silence, drawing widespread appreciation. It powerfully depicted issues such as the right to vote, quota-based discrimination, and the struggles of the oppressed and marginalized.

 

Among those who praised the documentary were Brigadier General (Retd.) Meshquat Uddin, Associate Professor Johorat Ara, Asst. Professor Amena Khatun, Assistant Professor Sharmin Sultana, asst. Professor Obaidur Rahman, and asst. Controller of Examinations Abdur Rahman,Students of the Department of education including M.Ed Mahbubur Rahman .

 

The program was hosted by Lecturer Md. Arif Hossain.

Students from various departments of Royal University of Dhaka were present at the commemorative event.
